Drs. Walter & Chen
My wife Elsie and I moved her from the Midwest in 1982 and have been active participants in Belllingham since. We were both raised in Iowa and both of us attended the Uviversity of Iowa for our undergraduate and graduate degrees. Elsie received a Masters Degree in Elementary Education and Early Childhood Education, obviously my degree was in Dentistry. We moved to Minneapolis where I completed an internship at the University of Minnesota. We moved to Columbus, Ohio where I completed my residency as the Chief Resident in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery at The Ohio State University. We moved to Bellingham in 1982 where I joined the practice of Dr. Dan Cheney.
We both have tried to be active in this community and have tried to assist worthy causes as well as supporting the education of our daughters. We have 2 daughters who attended public education until they graduated from Squalicum High School. One has graduated from the University of Washington and the other will sonn graduate from the University of Washington. Over the years I served on the Whatcom Middle School Site Base council, as well as founding a Tennis Booster Club at Squalicum HS began their tennis program and I have been active in the PTSA during all phases of their education. Elsie has been very active in multiple school committees over the period of their education, including President of the Parent Association at Silver Beach Elementary School and Secretary of the new Squalicum High School PTSA for nearly 8 years.
We have also tried to serve our community. I was on the committee to build an indoor pool that became the Arnie Hannah Center. I am a member of Bellingham Bay Rotary and have served on their committees for 28 years. I have been a Dircetor on the Mount Baker Theater Board, as well as on the Campaign for the Arts. These are a few examples of multiple community committees. Elsie has been very involved in Bible Study Fellowship serving as a children's learder for many years as well as sserving at church in their children's education department. She also helped to raise money and community support for St. Joseph's Hospital through the Sarah Debra Auxiliary for 18 years.
This is also coupled with staying very involved in my profession of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The following are some honors and offices I have been blessed with over the years:
Dr. Phillip Chen received his Bachelor of Science (BS) and Doctor of Dentistry (DDS) from the University of Alberta. Following dental school, he had undertaken a year of internship in oral and maxillofacial surgery at the University of Pennsylvania and gone on to complete his 4 year oral and maxillofacial surgery residency at St. John Health in Michigan. After his rigorous training and time in the midwest, Dr. Chen has returned to the beautiful Northwest to assume his career in private practice.
Dr. Chen enjoys all aspects of his specialty including extraction of impacted teeth, the placement of dental implants and the reconstruction of congenital and traumatic facial deformities. He continually attends educational courses to remain current with the most modern techniques and methods in all forms of diagnosis and treatment of oral and facial diseases. As a member of medical staff, he has hospital privileges at St. Joseph Hospital and Pacific Rim Outpatient Surgery Center.
